Who is your Idol?
It seems sometimes like everyone is searching for or wanting to be an American idol. Idols have fascinated, empowered, and enslaved human beings throughout history. Icons came into being during the 3rd century in the Eastern Orthodox church because worshippers wanted idols or imitations of Christ and other religious figures to direct them in the worship service. Many people during that period were against the use of icons because they thought using icons as part of the worship service would cause worshippers to be idolatrous. Anyone can do a Google search with a combination of the keywords Christ, icon, Jesus or religion and find information that shows that Jesus was the first true icon.
In many ways, like the early church goers, we still seek idols today. They do inspire and give us confidence. Sometimes when we are in those tough situations, we need an image or icon that we can pattern our life after to get us through difficult times.
One reason I created this clothing line is to let people know that no matter what they are going through or who they are, Jesus is the most cool and iconic person they will ever know that loves them. I know when people think of being cool and iconic, they sometimes may think those terms are reserved for people in Hollywood. When people get to know Jesus, they will begin to see amazing and iconic things happen in their own lives.
There are many idols in the world that people chase after. But the difference with Jesus is that His love, peace, and joy have no end. Some of these idols that we chase leave men and women spiritually, mentally and physically broken and bankrupt. By idolizing and imitating Christ of Nazareth, you can overcome many obstacles because you mentally put your hand in his hand and walk over those obstacles through faith.
One of my hopes is that I.C.O.N. will inspire dialogue amongst all ages and keep challenging people to ask the question, "Who is my idol?" I’m convinced that we all can lead an iconic life if we listen to the positive voices and images within. We always must continue to take our steps of faith by idolizing and imitating Christ of Nazareth.
